Nancy Lucina — Somatic Birth Educator, Ceremonial Facilitator, Creator of Birth Reimagined

Guide to women preparing for birth as the initiation it was always meant to be.

The story that started everything

Nancy Lucina is a somatic birth educator and ceremonial facilitator who developed Birth Reimagined, a nine-module online course using subconscious reprogramming and somatic self-inquiry to prepare women for natural birth.

I thought I was prepared.

It was 2008. I was carrying my first daughter, Violet, and I had read all the books, watched the videos, and hired a midwife for the home birth of my dreams. I had done everything you’re supposed to do.

But there was a quiet fear whispering in the back of my mind: What if I can’t do it? What if I somehow fail?

I never really addressed that fear. I just tried to stay positive.

Labor began beautifully. I moved through the first ten hours with strength and ease, opening almost completely. And then it happened. I froze. The fear I had pushed aside came roaring to the surface.

Physically, I stalled at 9.5 centimetres for hours.

My midwives were focused on my body. But inside, I was lost. I was facing what I now understand as the threshold moment of birth—the place where you’re invited to surrender fully into trust. And I wasn’t prepared. I hadn’t faced my fears during pregnancy. And so I couldn’t let go.

Eventually, I transferred to the hospital. Violet was born naturally and healthy, and for that I was grateful. But I grieved that birth for years.

People told me: At least she’s healthy. That’s all that matters.

But deep down, I knew that wasn’t all that mattered. Birth is not just about a healthy outcome. It’s a profound rite of passage that shapes us as women and mothers. And I had reached the threshold—and not been able to cross it.

That experience sent me deep. I spent the years after Violet studying hypnosis, somatic practice, and ceremony. I faced the fears I had avoided. I rewired, slowly, at the root.

By my second birth, I was different.

When that same threshold moment came, I recognized it. And this time, at the exact place where I had frozen, I had the tools. I breathed, dropped into my body, and I surrendered.

My son was born into my own hands after only an hour and a half of active labor.

By my third birth, I could access deep trust almost instantly. My third child was born after just 45 minutes of active labor.

Fear of childbirth doesn’t just change how you feel in labor. It changes what your body can do.

When fear runs in the background, your nervous system perceives danger. Cortisol floods your system. Your muscles tense. Blood flow redirects. Your cervix—the muscle that needs to open—tightens instead. Labor stalls. Pain intensifies, and this negative cycle of pain, fear and tension deepens.

This is biology, not woo-woo. Ask any midwife. She’s seen labor stop when a woman gets scared.

But the reverse is equally true. When you dissolve fear at the root—not manage it, not breathe through it, but actually clear it from the subconscious layer where it lives—your body does what it was made to do. Oxytocin flows. Muscles soften. The cervix opens. Labor flows.

That is what Birth Reimagined trains. That is why it exists.

“Birth is not something that happens to you. It is a profound initiation you were made for—and the preparation that matters most happens in the layer most birth classes never reach: the subconscious.”

I believe every woman carries within her the innate capacity to birth with presence and power.

Not because birth is always easy or because fear never arises. But because beneath the fear—cultural stories, inherited doubt, and the medical language that has slowly taught women to distrust their bodies—there is a knowing that has been there since the beginning.

My work is not about teaching you how to birth. You already know. My work is about clearing the way.

That means going into the subconscious, the place where your patterns live and where past experiences leave their imprints. Through guided meditation, gentle practice, and somatic self-inquiry, we dissolve what doesn’t belong to you. What’s left is trust, openness, and the primal, embodied readiness that is your birthright.

This approach works whether you are planning a home birth, a birth center birth, or a hospital birth. The inner terrain is the same. The preparation is the same.

My path to this work

After Violet’s birth, I went searching. I studied hypnosis, learning how to access the subconscious layer where fear actually lives and to rewire the patterns held there. I trained in somatic practice, understanding how the body holds what the mind tries to bypass. I deepened into ceremony and practice, the oldest technologies we have for moving through threshold moments with our whole selves.

I trained through the Organization of Doulas in Scandinavia (O.D.I.S), later went on to have advanced continuing education with midwife Ina May Gaskin, and furthered my studies through the Innate Postpartum Traditions training. I’ve also studied with Mexican midwives, and learned ceremonial arts from Chichimeca indigenous Mexican elders. Outside of the birth realm, I’m trained in E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Technique), am a certified mindfulness-based coach through the Asian Leadership Institute, a certified Rainbow Yoga Teacher, and a certified Inner Dance practitioner.

My work doesn’t come from one discipline or tradition. It is the distillation of years of embodied practice—my own and the women I have walked alongside. Hypnotic meditation. Somatic self-inquiry. Sound. Ceremony. Each modality addresses a different layer of the same thing: the fear and conditioning that stand between a woman and her own power. Together, they form my subconscious birth preparation method—the foundation every module of Birth Reimagined is built on.

I am not a midwife or a medical professional. I am a birth preparation educator, wisdom holder, and initiator. My authority comes through my experience of four births of my own, and more than 15 years of experience working with women, including hundreds of women around the world who have taken the Nancy Lucina birth course, Birth Reimagined. I’ve also supported women from Europe to Mexico as a birth keeper and postpartum care provider.
